The Full Story
What fuels you? For me, it's crochet. I first learned how to crochet when I was six years old. I have always loved to draw, paint, knit, crochet...anything I could do to let my creative juices flow! I've always gravitated to drawing and illustration, but of course I am my own worst critic and haven't pursued that professionally. But I digress...
Crochet is something I've taken from a calming pastime to a blooming small business! I started experimenting with different stitches and projects. If I couldn't find exactly what I wanted I would just make something up. Sometimes I would make cute little shapes by accident (I remember giving my mom a little crochet swatch because it came out in the shape of a heart - I was maybe about ten years old so it was probably a cute gesture back then!).
At first, I thought that not following a pattern meant I wasn't very good at crocheting. I've since realized that this probably put me ahead of the game! It wasn't long after I learned how to read patterns that I started altering them. It was like my cooking or baking, I could never just follow a recipe. I always wanted to find ways to make it better.
Before long I realized that if I was going to veer off and make my own creations I would need to write down what I did or I would never be able to replicate it. (I was absolutely terrible at counting rows and stitches. I would crochet until it looked good to me!) I didn't know it at the time, but I was learning to write my own patterns.
When I needed to learn a stitch or solve a problem I ran into, I referred to the trusty internet. I was able to learn so much from videos and how-to's but sometimes I couldn't find exactly what I needed. I would try some things on my own and eventually find a solution I was happy with. Who knew that my little fixes might be something others might find helpful too?
I've been selling my products on Etsy for a while and have had quite a bit of success with custom orders from family, friends and coworkers. A lot of my sales have been from word of mouth, or simply others noticing the items I've made for myself.
Hearts & Crafts etc. is truly my own little passion project, gaining more and more traction each day. I hope you enjoy browsing my site and all of the unique content I have to offer. Take a look around; perhaps you’ll discover what fuels you as well. Read on and enjoy!
